Izzy - our Pets as Therapy (PAT) reading dog

Pets As Therapy Reading Dogs

We are very lucky, Mrs Parrott and Izzy have been attending training and Izzy has now qualified as a PAT dog.  This means that she is now able to come to school and hear children read.  Initially, Izzy is going to come in after lunch on Mondays so if you are visiting then you may meet her.  If she is in the building there will be a sign on the door to say that she is here.

PAT dogs are used in schools, care homes and hospitals.  In schools they spend their time listening to stories, and are very good at providing reassurance and support for children who are reluctant readers, are keen to practice their reading skills more or who just need a special treat!  Excellent at listening, they love sharing books with children and can listen even when their eyes are closed.

Important information:

  • Izzy will always be with her owner, Mrs Parrott.
  • Izzy will always be on a lead.
  • Izzy will work in a quiet space.
  • They will spend generally spend between 10 and 20 minutes with her.
  • Staff will ensure that children understand what Izzy likes, and help them to behave accordingly.  Izzy prefers quiet voices and gentle hands.
  • Children will be able to stroke Izzy and reward her with a treat, but will clean their hands afterwards.
  • Not all children will be able to work with Izzy, but we hope most pupils will get to know her as the year goes on.
  • Class teachers will let you know of your child is going to work with Izzy, although sometimes there are unexpected changes to the timetable.

If you have any questions about Izzy, the PAT programme, or would NOT like your child to be invited to read to Izzy, please let us know.
